Meet Ben Gill: The Church’s Best Stewardship Leader

Just Posted this at LeaderWorks:

Ben Gill is THE man when it comes to Stewardship, Capital Campaigns, and raising money for Kingdom work. The impact of his company Resource Services, Inc. is incalculable. They helped us (at Christ Church) raise the millions of dollars needed for the acquisition and expansion of our campus. And after each campaign (there were six back-to-back capital stewardship campaigns) I knew the church was stronger, more focused, and more generous.

Recently, on a road trip through the mountains of Colorado, my wife and I stopped for a few days to stay with Ben and Holly. I asked if I could sit with him and talk a bit about stewardship and the challenge before the church today.

Ben is a good friend. No, Ben is a GREAT friend.  I owe him much for the things he taught me over the years. And in this short interview (18 minutes), he shares some significant insights into the art and skill of raising financial resources for your church. Enjoy.

Thank you, Ben, for your incredible ministry and teaching over the years.

There are only a few people who would ask me to write the Preface to their book. (Available here.) Ben is one of the few. His wonderful memoir is a collection of stories and vignettes from his youth and business ventures. It is funny, insightful, and poignant. I was only too happy to do it. See below.

But as you saw in the video clip, Ben challenges pastors who lead congregations to take to heart the message of biblical generosity personally; they should become generous givers themselves.  Over the years he has lived this creed personally at many levels. Ben and his wife are two of the most generous people Fran and I have known. He compassion for people and his love of the Gospel compels him to support and uphold the church in many ways.

This is why it was so easy to write the Preface to his book.  I’ve included a slightly revised version of what I wrote below.

From the Preface of his book:
Over the years, there were a lot of imitators who used Ben’s successful formula of member involvement and inspirational communication, but it all started with Ben.  He helped countless numbers of pastors and ministers teach on biblical stewardship and have confidence in their convictions.  Ben helped them dream, envision a future, and make big plans.  In fact, more money has been raised for the cause of Christ in the last 30 years than anyone dared imagine.  Until recently, the money raised by ministries help to create a mini-boom in church construction and expansion in program and ministry throughout North America.

Hundreds of thousands of people across North America worship in buildings that were funded by dollars that RSI helped to bring into God’s use.

At near the center of that revolutionary era, if not at THE center, was my friend, Ben. He is a wry, sly and quick-witted, story-telling, Arkansas preacher-man turned entrepreneur and he gave the church and its leaders what they needed and wanted. He gave them the ability to dream; to cast a vision and lead their churches to make it concrete. Literally.
