O Faithless Generation? Understanding the Religiosity of Gen Z and the Polars
Hosted by Dr. Daniel N. Gullotta (Ph.D., Religious Studies, Stanford University)
The parents of Generation Z and Gen Alpha (the Polars) are less inclined to encourage regular participation in formal worship services and model religious behaviors than previous generations. Over the past three decades, American religious identity has steadily declined, with little evidence that those who have disaffiliated will return. In this context, religious disaffiliation has become increasingly common. In today’s evolving cultural landscape, many young people are turning to new religions and different forms of spiritual and quasi-religious movements. This presentation delves into these emerging religious trends, examining their origins, how they fulfill spiritual needs, and their implications for traditional religious communities. By analyzing the data and trends, this presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the shifting religious landscape and offer insights for engaging with the younger generation.
